Doctor's Formulas D - Mannose formula is a dietary supplement containing the monosaccharide D-mannose. Mannose is used in urinary tract infections such as UTI. It helps to prevent and relieve the first symptoms, preventing the adhesion of bacteria to the mucous membrane.

Urinary tract infection

H  > is caused when pathogenic microorganisms, which normally enter the body through the urethra, are not immediately expelled, but settle and cause inflammation. For this to happen, the environment should be favorable, i.e. the body's immune system should be weak. Most urinary tract infections are caused by bacteria that normally live in the gut.

UTIs are more common in women. However, when men get sick the symptoms are usually more intense and a longer treatment is required. The most common symptoms of urinary tract infection are frequency, urge to urinate, pain during urination, passing a very small amount of urine despite the strong need to urinate, foul-smelling urine, pain in the abdomen, hematuria. UTI diagnosis is made with urological tests (general and urine culture). In recurrent infections, additional special tests are required to determine if there is a problem in the urinary system.

Some people tend to have urinary tract infections more often because of certain habits or because of their condition. People who often postpone urination, those who don't drink enough water, those who are pregnant, those suffering from chronic diseases such as diabetes, multiple sclerosis, neuropathies, those with low immunity and those with catheters are at greater risk of getting sick.

In the prevention and treatment of urinary tract infection, drinking plenty of water and cranberry supplements and following the hygiene rules of the sensitive area helps. After determining the microbe, based on the tests, the appropriate antibiotic can be administered.

What is D-Mannose ?

D-mannose is a simple sugar, which has a special contribution to metabolism, through its role in the glycosylation of certain proteins. It is found in many fruits and vegetables, such as cranberries, cabbage, peaches and tomatoes. But it is also produced in the body from glucose.

To E. Coli is the most common pathogen associated with urinary tract infections. For both E.coli and other pathogenic bacteria, fimbriae, the proteinaceous capillary-like appendages on the surface, mediate their binding to specific receptors on epithelial cells. At the tip of each fimbria is a glycoprotein called a lectin. Studies have identified the mannose-specific lectin on the surface of adherent E. Coli strains. D-mannose is rapidly absorbed and reaches the peripheral organs in about 30 minutes and is then excreted by the urinary system. There it binds to the special lectins of the bacteria and thus prevents their adhesion to the walls of the bladder. Pathogens are eventually excreted in the urine, without causing infection.

Mannose has the advantage of not developing resistance to bacteria, so it can be used repeatedly.
