A healthy vagina has large colonies of lactic acid bacteria, which are part of the natural flora of the vagina. The bacteria produce lactic acid to create an environment in the bay of pH 3.8 to 4.5 which is quite acidic. This slightly acidic environment is a natural defense mechanism to protect against the spread of bacteria. The process that creates this acidic pH is controlled in part by the female hormone estrogen.
